VISUAL DESIGN INTERN AT GIBSON & DEHN
OVERVIEW:
Following my sophomore year of college, I worked as a design intern at a startup candle company in New York. While at Gibson & Dehn, I was able to experience first-hand many different aspects of a business’s creative process. Projects I was involved with included creating web banners that went into production, executing product photoshoots, creating potential website mock-ups, creating relevant graphics, and maintaining company social media. My time at Gibson & Dehn allowed me to explore my skills in UX Design, the Adobe Creative Suite, user research, branding, and creative problem solving.
PROJECT #1 - WEB BANNERS
The project I was most proud of from my time at Gibson & Dehn was designing web ads. I sifted through previous product photography, and content that I had help produce over the summer, and created various sized web and social media ads. These ads ended up being sent through and officially used!
Reflection:
This project taught me a lot about adjusting page content to fit different artboard sizes, and left me feeling proud and excited to continue learning design!
PROJECT #2 - REWARDS MOCK-UPS
I helped create mock-ups for a potential rewards app that featured a candle that became closer to being empty as the user increased their total rewards points. Each scan would move the customer closer and closer to receiving a reward – a discount on their next purchase.
REFLECTION:
This project taught me about utilizing the company’s branding guidelines when creating my designs.
PROJECT #3 - PHOTOSHOOTS
One of my main tasks at Gibson & Dehn was to increase the amount of content available for the company’s social media and advertisements. These projects were incredible, because I got to simultaneously explore my photography skills, Gibson & Dehn’s brand identity, and the city of New York!
REFLECTION:
Working on the photoshoots taught me the value of having strong content to choose from. With my previous experiences in graphic design, if I needed content – I would simply create it in the Adobe Creative Suite. My internship, however, was eye-opining, because I couldn’t just illustrate content. We needed to photograph high quality content that was in line with our brand. This project exposed me to a new aspect of visual design and content creation that I had never before experienced.
